GOD’S COVENANT OF TRUTH AND FREEDOM- “The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life, but [still] some of you fail to believe and trust and have faith.” (John 6:63b-64a)
GLORY AND PRAISE TO JESUS WHO IS GOD’S WORD!
We have been talking about the vital importance of God’s word in our lives. A misconception that we no longer need to hear and obey God’s word because of God’s grace towards us is rampant in today’s church. This deceit will cause many sincere Christians to be powerless and live a life of defeat, anxiety, worry and depression.
I have a question for you. When did the words (instructions) of God and Jesus (the same yesterday, today and forever) stop being spirit and life? The answer: THEY DIDN’T! We will see later that Paul and the other New Testament writers admonished the believers of the church age, of which we are a part of, to be hearers and doers of the word!
THE APPLIED WORD OF GOD IN OUR LIVES IS ABSOLUTLEY VITAL TO WALKING IN THE POWER AND PROMISES OF GOD. GRACE GETS US IN TO THE KINGDOM AND THEN WE HAVE TO LEARN AND GROW IN THE THINGS OF GOD TO REALIZE (THROUGH PRACTICAL APPLICATION IN OUR LIVES) THE FULLNESS OF WHAT JESUS DID FOR US!
The word life that Jesus spoke of is the Greek word “Zoe”. It means in the absolute sense, life as God has it. Of this life men became partakers of through faith in the Jesus! His words to you and me are the very life and nature of God!
I WANT THAT IN MY LIFE.
Now let’s go back to where we ended yesterday.
“So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free. So if the Son liberates you [makes you free men], then you are really and unquestionably free.” (John 8; 31, 32, 36)
Notice that Jesus is talking to believers. The very next word is “if.” That would make what follows conditional. To be true disciples we need to abide in His word, hold fast to His teachings and live in accordance with them!
Let’s go a little deeper here. The Greek word for “word” here is logos. It means the divine expression. The expression of divine thought-not the mere name of an object…the revealed word of God. The Greek word for “abide” is meno. It means to stay in a given place, state, relation or expectancy.
Was His Father’s word, His Father’s divine expression important to Jesus? And then did He think it was important for us? Absolutely! He said “IF” we abide in it (hold fast to His teachings and live in accordance with them, if we stay in them in relationship and expectancy) then we are His disciples.
Over the years, we have come to the place where we throw around these Christian phrases without considering their proper implications. They have become hollow and meaningless. What does the word disciple mean in the Greek? It means
“a learner” indicating thought accompanied by endeavor. Where do we start becoming a disciple of Jesus, the Lord of Lord and the king of Kings? Jesus tells us, by abiding in His word!
We will pick it up here next time. I realize that for many this is not a fun message. So why teach this? Simple, if we want to be, do and have what the word says, we have to do what the word says. We want to walk in the fullness of God and our heart is for all believers to walk in the victory, bought and paid for by Jesus, our Lord!
